Cadet and Parent Information

From The Citadel's Doctor:

We always have several cases of influenza in the Corps of Cadets during the winter, peaking in January and early February each year. We admit cadets to the Infirmary to provide supportive care for them and to limit exposure of other cadets to those with the flu. Currently, we have 11 cadets admitted to the Infirmary with the flu. Our total number of beds is 36, so we have not reached capacity at this point. Also, we ask cadets with families in the area if they would like to recover at home. Many elect to do so, which helps to limit the number of Infirmary admissions. In our population, the illness is mild-to-moderate in severity and lasts 5-7 days, with cadets feeling much better after 3-4 days on medication. Most cadets can return to the barracks when they’ve had no fever for at least 24 hours and feel much better. We expect the number of cases to start falling off in the next week or two.

From the Office of Study Abroad

To the parents/family of our Citadel students,

On behalf of the Office of Study Abroad we would like to address concerns regarding study abroad transfer credit.

Students who study abroad meet with an academic advisor prior to travel and ensure that the courses they are taking will transfer per our academic policies. Students must earn a C or better in the course abroad for it to transfer back to the Citadel. Last fall, the students did very well and all of their courses transferred back to the Citadel.

Students should absolutely study abroad. The learning outcomes are significant and global awareness and understanding are a key characteristic employers and the military want to see in college graduates.

We value your feedback and invite you to contact our office with any questions you may have regarding the study abroad program at The Citadel.

Warm regards,

Zane U. Segle, Ph.D.

The Citadel and the 2017 Presidential Inauguration

The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes and the Summerall Guards were selected by the Presidential Inauguration Committee to march in the Presidential Inauguration Parade on Jan. 20.

To assist parents with providing informed guidance throughout their cadet's four class years at The Citadel, the Provost's office has created a Parent website with information that is most relevant and timely to you. Here you will find information about Parents Weekend, Important Conversations to have with your student and important communications that address parent concerns.

Take the time to discuss with your cadet the requirements for wearing the Ring and walking at Commencement. It's not unusual for cadets not to be in the same graduation track as their classmates. However, all too often, students learn too late that they have fallen short of a particular requirement. So everyone can adjust expectations, begin the conversation when your student is a freshman. Is your cadet considering a change in majors? Is a summer course needed to stay on track? Will studying abroad affect the completion of other courses? Not all courses are offered each semester, so it's wise for the student to discuss with his or her advisor when to take a particular course.

You may not know this, but cadets must request to replace a grade. The Registrar's office has the form and can answer questions about grades.

Cadet Photography - From The Director Of Publications

Cadets can now access their cadet portraits, including yearbook pictures, leadership photos, company class photos and ring photos (when taken).  Check your mail for a postcard with this information.

Please note:  Because the yearbook staff must meet strict deadlines, makeups will not appear in the yearbook.

To access photos   Log into Lesesne Gateway (lesesnegateway.citadel.edu)

  • Click on the Campus Life tab
  • Navigate to the Photography and PR
  • Click on Cadet Portraits, Class Photos, Ring Photos

What’s there:

  • Yearbook Portraits and Company Class Photos (if cadets had pictures taken).
  • Senior cadets—if they participated in the Ring Ceremony—will have Ring Portraits.

Along with portraits, cadets will be granted a Photo Copyright Release which will allow them to legally print as many copies in whatever format they want.

What if my cadet failed to have his or her photo taken?  The photographer has established 4 makeup days for cadets who are unhappy with their photos or who did not have their photos made.  Made-up photos will be available on Lesesne Gateway after February 1, 2017.  Because of yearbook deadlines, these photos will not appear in the yearbook.

What’s the best finish to use for photos?  A matte finish will give the photo a professional quality finish.

Have the photos been touched up?  No.  Photo re-touching services, however, are available at most professional printers.  A Google search will help you find local and online services.

How long will photos be available?  As long as the cadet is currently enrolled.

Will photos be available after graduation?  After graduation, photos will be stored with The Citadel Alumni Association.  Alumni seeking access will have to pay a storage fee.

From the Office of the Provost

December 21, 2016

Dear Parents and Families of our Cadets,

We have had a remarkable semester. The largest freshman class on record, weathering Hurricane Matthew, earning the Southern Conference football championship, and being once again named the South’s #1 Public College in our category -- I don’t think there is much more we could have fit in over the past few months! Your cadet has truly earned some time off to relax, recharge, and prepare for the Spring semester.

Conversations with your cadet about his or her future over the next few weeks are an important way to support their success. To facilitate these discussions, we have provided valuable information on The Adjutant page of the Parents’ Website. Please use these as conversation-starters with your cadet.

Success at The Citadel revolves around the four pillars of our leadership development program: Academics, Military, Physical Fitness and Moral/Ethical.  Although these pillars serve as the basis for our learning environment, the concepts we teach are further reinforced in discussions at home with people they respect.

We hope you will visit our Adjutant page on the Parents’ Website and review the information provided for your cadet’s class. You’ll also want to note key dates for the Spring semester (provided below), which is shaping up to be as busy as the Fall! If we can assist you with any additional information or answer any questions you may have, please give us a call at 843-953-6088 or send us an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Finally, please be aware that The Citadel will be closed from 22 December through 2 January.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
