Cadets returning to west side stands at Johnson Hagood Stadium
Charleston, S.C. – When the 2014 football season begins, the S.C. Corps of Cadets will sit beside fans on the west side of The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium. The Corps has sat on the east side stands since 2006 when the latest renovations to Johnson Hagood Stadium were completed.
The college administration has been weighing the pros and cons of moving the Corps back to the west stands for several years. "After considering the logistical issues and determining that we can accommodate season ticket holders, we decided to move the Corps back because of the benefits of creating a livelier atmosphere for our fans," said Citadel Athletics Director Larry Leckonby.
Bringing the Corps back to the home side will not displace any season ticket holders according to Leckonby. Everyone who currently sits on the west side of the stadium will continue to be seated on the west side.
"The move should provide the Corps with a more enjoyable game day experience while also allowing more camaraderie and connection with fans and alumni," said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John Rosa.
Johnson Hagood Stadium underwent an extensive renovation project a decade ago, resulting in the current west side bleachers and the tower which features suites, the Pearson Club Level and a state-of-the-art press box.
During the renovation process, which encompassed the 2004 and 2005 seasons, fans were seated on the east side of the stadium while the Corps sat in temporary bleachers on the west side.
In 2006, when the west side seating was completed, Bulldog fans, players' families, recruits and faculty/staff returned to the home side and the Corps was moved to face the fans and anchor the east side stands.
