
Cadets honored for service, valor, leadership
Four cadets were honored this spring for valor, leadership, scholarship and service. The awards were presented during the April 20 military dress parade at The Citadel.
Cadet Medal of Valor
Cadet Justin Whetstone
This award recognizes extraordinary valor and heroism.
In June 2006 Cadet Whetstone was credited with rescuing a swimmer from drowning at Folly Beach and providing life saving first aid until emergency medical attention arrived.
William G. Willard Jr. Award.
Cadet Sgt. Major Chase Mohler
The award is presented annually to the second-class (junior) cadet selected by the senior cadet leadership - the regimental commander, the executive officer and the four battalion commanders - for exemplifying the qualities of integrity, devotion to duty, and service to The Citadel. The award was established by Willard’s widow. Willard, Citadel Class of 1929, was founder of Willard Oil Co. in Spartanburg, S.C.
R.B. Pitts III Memorial Award
Cadet Sgt. Robert B. Isaac
This award is given in memory of Cadet Reuben Burton Pitts III, Class of 1963, to the second class (junior) cadet who is selected by classmates as showing the greatest concern for the well-being of others.

The award is presented to a first-class (senior) cadet in recognition of the qualities of honor, courage, scholarship, leadership and service, which are necessary to protect and preserve the fundamental institution of government and the advancement of society.
