New cadet activities director now on board
Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Robert Sberna of Summerville, S.C., has been named director of cadet activities at The Citadel.
Sberna has been at The Citadel since 1998 as a tactical officer, a staff member responsible for 1st Battalion. Before coming to The Citadel, he spent 22 years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force. During his military career he was an aviator and navigator, logging 2,200 flying hours in the B-52, FB-111 and T-39. He also served as an instructor on the FB-111A, an all-weather strategic bombing aircraft.
A 1976 Citadel graduate, Sberna is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation and Achievement medals, the Defense Service Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Southwest Asia Service Medal
“Bob Sberna is a talented, enthusiastic supporter of cadets in all they do; he’s vitally interested in helping provide them the absolute finest in cadet activities and he is an exceptional role model in the principled leadership development program on campus,” said Col. Greg Stone, commandant of cadets. “I know he will bring great, contagious energy to the organization and all those with whom he will work. “
Sberna is looking forward to working with cadets on fun activities that enhance day-to-day life. He will continue to lead the alcohol awareness and drug prevention training.
“The social development of cadets – not just how you conduct yourself at a formal dinner function but how you prepare for an interview, how you conduct yourself in a meeting to how you behave in social situations - is an integral part of developing principled leaders,” Sberna said. “Having been a tactical officer I had the advantage of working with a lot of cadets. I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge and working with the entire Corps to enhance cadet activities.”
Sberna replaces Col. Richard Irby, who retires on Aug. 30. Irby came to cadet activities in 1996 as manager of the beach house and Mark Clark Hall. He served as deputy director of cadet activities under Col. Floyd Brown and was named director upon Floyd’s retirement in 1999. Early in his Citadel career he served as an Army ROTC instructor and was chief of operations in the commandants department.
