Billboard promotes hot college designation
A billboard on I-26 announces The Citadel's designation as one of the 2006 hottest colleges in the country -- a citation given by Newsweek magazine and Kaplan College Guide.
The billboard is the centerpiece of an awareness campaign to let prospective students know that The Citadel has the nation's highest four-year graduation rate for public colleges and universities whose students make up to 1200 on the SAT.
"With our four-year graduation rate of 62% and the national four-year graduation rate of 29%, our cadets are statistically much more likely to graduate in four years than their peers in other colleges," said John Powell, director of admissions.
"We also tell prospective students that even if they do not plan on seeking a military commission, they can still get an excellent academic education while reaping the benefits of the leadership development and structure that a military college offers."
The billboard directs people to the website www.citadel.edu/hot where they can view the admissions video, learn about the history of the college and request additional information.
For three out of the last five years, The Citadel has set records for the number of applications the college has received. Powell said that applications remain strong this year and as of mid-March have reached the third highest in the college's history.
