PB, Bravo and Alpha companies nab achievement awards
Palmetto Battery, Alpha and Bravo companies have earned five of the The Citadel’s annual awards outstanding achievement as cadet companies.
The awards will be presented during the Sept. 17, 2010, military dress parade recognizing outstanding leadership, academic and military performance and community responsibility that occurred during the 2009-2010 academic year.
The Gen. Charles P. Summerall Cup is named for The Citadel’s president from 1931 to 1953. It is donated by the European Citadel Association and is awarded to the cadet company with the best academic achievement. Companies are rated on average grade point average for the fall and spring semesters with consideration for any increase or decrease between semesters. Palmetto Battery had an overall GPA of 3.03.
Palmetto Battery also earned the Commandant’s Cup, which is presented to the company earning the highest points in parade and squad drill performance. The award was established by Lt. Col. William C. Miller, commandant from 1926 to 1931.
Cadet Capt. Ryan Coker, company commander, will accept the awards on behalf of Palmetto Battery.
The President’s Cup is the highest honor that can be given to a cadet company. It was established by Gen. Hugh P. Harris, president of The Citadel from 1965 to 1970. The cup is awarded to the cadet company that establishes the highest combined score in academic achievement, military performance, extracurricular participation and fourth-class retention during the previous academic year. The winning company receives the title of Honor Company and serves as college ambassadors during special functions statewide.
The Honor Company is Bravo Company, which also will receive the Murray D. Bonnoitt Award. Named in honor of Murray D. Bonnoitt, Citadel Class of 1962 and past president of the alumni association, the award is given to the cadet company with the highest freshman class retention rate for the previous school year.
Cadet Lt. Nelson Lalli, company platoon leader, will accept the Bonnoitt and President’s Cup awards on behalf of Bravo Company.
Alpha Company has earned the Milton A. Pearlstine Award. Presented by The Citadel Alumni Association in honor of Milton A. Pearlstine, Class of 1919 and past association president, the award recognizes the cadet company achieving the highest freshman class GPA for the previous school year. Alpha Company’s Class of 2013 completed its freshman year with an overall 3.06 GPA.
Alpha Company Executive Officer Cadet Lt. Kyle Fuller will accept the award.
