eASCE_Ridgway_Citadel_01733747Members of The Citadel student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will receive a special visit Friday, Sept. 14, from ASCE past President Kathy J. Caldwell.  Caldwell will be a guest at the 3:45 p.m. retreat parade where civil engineering students will receive ASCE’s Ridgway Award for most outstanding chapter.  A reception will immediately follow the parade in the Club Level at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The Robert Ridgway Student Chapter Award recognizes the most outstanding chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers which includes 25,000 student members in 281 chapters across the United States and 11 countries.  The award is a first for The Citadel.

ASCE student officers receiving the Ridgway Award on behalf of the chapter during the parade are:

President Michael Singer, Goose Creek, S.C.
Vice President Cameron Dyson, Hanahan, S.C.
Treasurer Michael Griffin, Hanahan, S.C.
Secretary Jakob Ketchum, Ocala, Fla.

“This is ASCE’s most prestigious student award—it names The Citadel the 2012 national champions in civil engineering,” said Dean of Engineering Ron Welch.  “This is an unprecedented period of success for our students, and through these accomplishments students are demonstrating principled leadership in the engineering profession.”

The Citadel ASCE chapter hosts National Engineer’s Week events on campus and organizes a professional activities event attracting companies to a student career fair.  Students travel and participate in activities such as the National Workshop for Student Leaders, Battery to Beach Service Project, and contribute countless volunteer hours to the profession and community.
