The Citadel garners another Fulbright
Cadet Andrew Raynor Jones, a senior German major of Aiken, S.C., has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study next year at Marburg University in Marburg, Germany. Jones is the seventh Citadel German major or minor to claim a Fulbright grant since 2002.
Jones's research project examines efforts at reconciliation between German Protestants and Catholics after Pope John Paul's controversial 1980 visit. Preparing to undertake the study has been a comprehensive process for Jones who began working with German Professor Col. Al Gurganus two and a half years ago to become competitive for the Fulbright grant.
"Andrew has availed himself of the opportunities The Citadel affords good students, applying for summer-study grants to improve his language skills at the Goethe Institute and taking part in an archaeological survey in Turkey,” said Gurganus. “Both trips substantially expanded his intellectual horizons."
Jones credits his professors for their direction and encouragement. "I was undecided as to what I might pursue after graduation until I took a course on Brecht my sophomore year. It opened my eyes to the possibilities. Our faculty in German surpass every expectation in motivating students to realize their potential," he said.
