Welcome to Academic Advising

Greetings Students!

  • The Citadel ranks No. 3 nationally among public colleges and universities in our Carnegie classification in the percentage of students who graduate in four years.  That category includes colleges with master's level programs.  The latest data shows that 62.4% of entering freshmen graduated from The Citadel within four years.  The national average four-year graduation rate is about 30%.
  • The Citadel leads South Carolina public colleges and universities in four-year graduation rate.
  • The U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2012 recognize The Citadel in several different categories:
  1. The Citadel ranks No. 1 among the top public universities in the South that offer a full range of undergraduate and master's degree programs.
  2. The Citadel ranks No. 5 among best public and private universities in the South offering up to a master's degree but few, if any, doctoral programs.
  3. The School of Engineering ranked No. 21 for best undergraduate engineering programs in the nation.

Moreover, The Citadel provides numerous services and resources to help you resolve problems and support your success!

Faculty Academic Advisors are here to help you navigate the requirements, policies, and opportunities, and to help you explore and achieve your academic goals.  Each student is an important member of the Citadel family; and faculty, staff, and administrators want your experience at The Citadel to be a successful one.  We invite you to explore this Website to learn more about the Academic Advising Program at The Citadel.

The mission of the Academic Advising Program at The Citadel is to assist students in using the educational programs offered by the college to meet their individual needs, enhance their abilities, and to achieve personal, educational, and career goals consistent with the institutional mission of Honor, Duty, and Respect.  The integrated program will assist all students to make a successful transition to, and establish their place in, college life; to take responsibility for learning how to set academic, career, and personal goals, and the strategies for achieving them; and to graduate in a timely manner, successfully meeting all requirements.  Successful advising contributes to the Citadel's ultimate goal of developing mature and self-directed students capable of making appropriate decisions, becoming life-long learners, and being successful leaders in communities.

To begin the advising process, each student is assigned a faculty advisor who provides counsel concerning course selections and options within particular courses of study.  Though students are encouraged to visit their Academic Faculty Advisors throughout the academic year, formal planning sessions are designated each semester during pre-registration and registration. In addition to your Academic Faculty Advisor, you will have a Tactical Officer, and a Company Academic Advisor.  Please see the descriptions below for more detailed information about these advisors:

Academic Faculty Advisor:  Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who provides counsel concerning course selections and options within particular courses of study.  Though students are encouraged to visit their Faculty Advisors throughout the academic year, formal planning sessions are designated each semester during pre-registration and registration.

Tactical Officer:  Each cadet company is assigned a staff member or an active duty officer who is currently serving one of the ROTC detachments at The Citadel.  This officer provides counsel concerning matters of cadet lifestyle and regulations, provides leadership training in cadet company areas, and supervises drill periods.

Company Academic Advisor:  Each cadet company is assigned a specially chosen member of the faculty or staff who works closely with the Company Tactical Officer and the cadet chain-of-command to ensure that academic and military requirements are compatible and that cadets are aware of academic resources and services available to them on the campus.
