For The Citadel Women’s Club charity begins at home
If you’re interested in finding real bargains this spring you will want to put the annual Citadel Women’s Club Yard Sale on your calendar for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 28, in Deas Hall adjacent to McAlister Field House on The Citadel campus.
All proceeds from the sale go to the John S. Carter Scholarship Fund, providing financial aid to cadets. In the last 10 years $185,892 has been raised by the Women’s Club and 200 cadets have received awards.
The Citadel Women’s Club is a charitable organization that works to improve campus life for cadets, faculty, staff and families at The Citadel and adopts projects to better the community.
“This sale has gotten bigger every year, and the cadets play a big role themselves. Many of the items we sell are discarded each year before the cadets graduate or leave campus for the summer,” said Edith Riggle, the volunteer coordinator of the sale. “Cadets are moving on, many of them into the military, and we recycle what they don’t want, and that in turn helps their fellow cadets in need by raising money for the yard sale.”
Some of the merchandise available includes furniture, linens, kitchen and household items, decorations, office and school supplies, clothing, Citadel uniforms, apparel and accessories, books, appliances and cleaning supplies.
“We collect items to sell all year long from Citadel families and the community. Then volunteer members of the club put in hundreds of hours organizing the sale, helped by the very cadets who are receiving financial assistance,” said Vanya Perez, president of the women’s club. “It’s a sight to see it all come together in the end.”
Anyone interested in donating items can contact Edith Riggle at 817‐1844 or Vanya Perez at 789‐3981 for more information.
