Class of 2009 reports for military training

The Class of 2009 reported to The Citadel Saturday for the start of orientation and military training.

As of tallies collected Friday, Aug. 12, this class should number 628 men and 48 women. That includes 66 athletes who reported to campus on Aug. 1. Final freshmen reporting tallies won’t be complete until early next week.

Freshmen are expected to make up about 35 percent of the estimated 2,000-member South Carolina Corps of Cadets this fall.

The Class of 2009 is a diverse group:

  • There are 628 men and 48 women from 40 states and six foreign countries.
  • Minorities make up 14 percent of the freshman class.
  • Academically, the freshmen class has an average SAT score of 1094 and an average high school GPA of 3.2.

Incoming freshmen will spend today and Sunday, Aug. 14 in academic and campus orientation. Military training, where students will be issued uniforms and supplies, begins at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15. Uppeclassmen return Aug. 21 and classes start Aug. 24.
