Schedule of Commencement Week Activities

Commencement week at The Citadel is the culmination of years of academic work by cadets and evening undergraduate and graduate students. To mark the occasion, four days of events are planned, beginning May 1 and culminating with commencement exercises May 3 and 4. 

Information about Commencement Week 2008 will be added as it becomes available. Please note events, particularly outdoor events affected by the weather, are subject to change. Please check back often for the most up-to-date information available.

THURSDAY, MAY 1

1:30 p.m. - Star of the West Finals, Summerall Field
This event is the culmination of many hours of practice in rifle drill. The winner will be named the “Best Drilled Cadet” and will have his or her name inscribed on the Star of the West Monument located near the flagpole on Summerall Field. That cadet will also wear the Star of the West Medal. The ship, Star of the West, was fired upon by Citadel cadets in 1861.

3 p.m. - Awards Convocation, McAlister Field House
The convocation will feature the presentation of several awards to include Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

5:30 p.m. - Baccalaureate Service, Summerall Chapel
Speaker: The Reverend Robert C. Sturdy, Class of 2003, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
No flash photography or artificial lighting permitted inside the chapel.

FRIDAY, MAY 2

Military Commissioning Ceremonies
8-10 a.m. – Army
10-11 a.m. – Air Force
5-6:30 p.m. – Navy/Marine
Place: Summerall Chapel

These ceremonies are for graduates being commissioned into the Armed Forces and their families. A “swearing-in” ceremony for all branches will take place Saturday morning during Commencement Exercises. No flash photography or artificial lighting permitted inside the chapel.

10:45 a.m. - Briefing for Alumni Parents, McAlister Field House
Alumni parents who will present diplomas to graduating cadets should arrive by 10:35 a.m. for information and a walk-through of the presentations on the stage and details on where to meet, park and when to arrive Saturday morning.

11:15 a.m. - Alumni Parents Photos, McAlister Field House
This event will occur immediately after Briefing for Alumni Parents. It is intended for parents who will be presenting diplomas to graduating cadets and will include individual diploma presentation photos for the Alumni News magazine, family photos and the Legacy Photo of alumni parents and graduates.

Noon - The Citadel Alumni Association Life Membership Ceremony, Holliday Alumni Center
Invitation only event members of the Class of 2008 and their families. 

Noon - Honors Program Luncheon, Regimental Commanders’ Riverview Room
Invitation only luncheon for Honors Program participants and their family members.

2:15 p.m. - 2009 Summerall Guards Performance in Honor of the Class of 2008, Summerall Field
The 2009 Summerall Guards will perform the traditional “Citadel Series” in honor of the Senior Class.

3 p.m. - Graduation (Long Gray Line) Parade, Summerall Field
Members of the Class of 2008 will march in their final parade as cadets. As the class crosses Summerall Field to “take the review,” the leadership of the Class of 2009 will take command of the Corps of Cadets.

SATURDAY, MAY 3

9:30 a.m. - Cadet Commencement Exercises, McAlister Field House
A professional photographer will take photos of each graduate during the diploma presentation. Families are asked not to come forward to take family snapshots or video.
Speaker: U.S. Sen. Lindsay Graham.

SUNDAY, MAY 4

2 p.m. - The Citadel Graduate College Commencement Exercises, McAlister Field House
A professional photographer will take photos of each graduate during the diploma presentation. Families are asked not to come forward to take family snapshots or video.
Speaker: George Benson, president, College of Charleston
