A new navigation system for 1000 Citadel web pages.
The major change to the look and behavior of The Citadel's web site
was the construction of a new navigation system (see Figure 1
to the right).
A good navigation system makes information easier to find by tying together
similar pages. Our new navigation system is an improvement over the old one,
but further improvement is always possible.
Your suggestions are welcomed to help us further improve the
way our web-based information is presented.

Navigation items at the top left
|
The text in the upper-left corner of each page is the site title.
In this example, the site is named "About The Citadel",
which contains over 100 web pages that all provide information
about the college, including its history, values,
administrative organization, driving directions, maps,
news, visitor information, and more. The title
"About The Citadel" will be at the top of all 100 web pages in this site.

The next navigation item is the collection of site tabs
or level one tabs
(About, Academics, Admissions, Athletics, CGPS, Corps,
Faculty and Staff, and Tools). Click on a site tab to
visit the entry point to that site. These tabs are visible
from everywhere in the site. Below the site tabs is
an increasingly standard feature on many web sites,
the breadcrumb trail, which displays the path all the way
back to the home page.
For example, you can click on "Home", "About The Citadel",
"Directions and Maps", or "Campus Map and Visitor Parking"
to return to those pages.

|
The next navigation item is the collection of main tabs
or level two tabs
for the site you are in (see example to the left).
The main tabs are the main points of entry to the content further into each site.
For this example, "Directions and Maps" has been selected.
|
 |

|
The other links are a collection of links related to the site,
but not necessarily located within the site. For example,
"Job Listings" directs the visitor to the HR site.

|
The next navigation item is the collection of minor tabs
or level three tabs.
The minor tabs are points of entry to content further into each main tab.
For example, if you click on "Charleston Area", you will be taken to
a map of the Charleston area within the "Directions and Maps" main tab.

The next navigation item is the page title.
For this example page, the page title is "Campus Map and Visitor Parking".

The quick search box is a tool
to perform both a "people search" and a "web search."
To use this tool, select the type of search, enter the text to search for,
and click Go.
Starting in October 2003, web searches will only be able to locate
pages managed using the netCCMS© server;
this is to ensure that visitors are only able to find information
that is trusted to be complete and up-to-date.
|
The A-Z Site Map is a simple, alphabetical listing of
all web sites at The Citadel, from Academic Support Programs to
Writing and Learning Center. This is truly a one-stop index
to find all Citadel web sites. (If your web site is not listed here,
please let us know.) The Printer-friendly link
is a very standard feature in many web sites; it calls up a
printable version of the page you are visiting. This is especially
valuable for printing to color printers, to avoid printing
excess blue ink.

The Contact the Citadel link is used
by visitors to send an email to the Offices of
Admissions, Financial Aid, Public Affairs, CGPS, the site webmaster,
and many other recipients.
The Best viewed in ... link takes visitors
to a list of standard browser and screen requirements for viewing the web site.
The last modification date/time for each page is automatically inserted here.
