Cadet Web Policy

Policies for Cadet Points-of-Contact
for http://cadets.citadel.edu/*
1. Purpose
  • The purpose of this project is to enhance cadet involvement on The Citadel's web site (http://*.citadel.edu/).
2. Getting Started
  • Listed below are the technical notes on how to get started as a cadet web point-of-contact (CWPOC):
2.1. Getting Started - Responsibility
  • Each company commander will assign a single CWPOC who will "own" the company's web page(s) and be fully responsible for their content
  • Any inappropriate content is the full responsibility of the CWPOC
  • Any breach of these policy rules by a CWPOC will result in termination of access and reassignment of a new CWPOC for that company
2.2. Getting Started - Startup
  • Each CWPOC will be assigned a single top-level company page, e.g. http://cadets.citadel.edu/bat1/, http://cadets.citadel.edu/alpha/, http://cadets.citadel.edu/band/, http://cadets.citadel.edu/bravo/, et cetera; some overlap is allowed, e.g. a single person could be the CWPOC for both First Battalion and Alpha Company
  • An index of all company pages is located at http://citadel.edu/company/
  • The company commander may request access for their CWPOC by sending an email to eric.oman@citadel.edu; please include the name and email address of the CWPOC
  • Each top-level company page contains several "placeholder sections" that can be quickly filled in by each CWPOC
  • The recommended information includes: company name, list of company officers, description and information about the company, and any links to other pages
  • At their own discretion, each CWPOC may either (1) simply fill in the placeholders or (2) completely redesign and replace their top-level company pages
2.3. Getting Started - Beyond Startup
  • Each CWPOC may create a reasonable number of other company pages in their folder
  • Each CWPOC may collect and post HTML pages from anyone in their company, but they will still be fully responsible for all content
  • This project is envisioned as a way to increase cadet involvement in our web site, which is currently lacking; further projects along these lines will come in the future; we are open to suggestions; please send suggestions to Webmaster (Overall Citadel Site) using the CCQM form.
3. Required, Prohibited, and Allowed
  • This section describes what things are required, prohibited, and allowed.
3.1. Required
  • Page identification. All company pages on the server should identify which company the page belongs to.
  • Link to The Citadel home page. The reason for this is many people will come to the page from off-campus sites without ever having passed through the The Citadel's home page (http://citadel.edu/). A link to The Citadel's Home Page will help them learn more about the college.
  • Date of last update. A date helps visitors know the information on the page is checked and up to date. Here is code that can be used to automatically insert the last-modification date into a page:
    <!--#flastmod file="index.shtml" -->
This code only works for pages whose names end in ".shtml", but it can be used to return the last-modification date of any page within that folder.
  • Valid contact e-mail address. A valid e-mail address for visitors to send comments and feedback is required. Such feedback is one way to learn if a web page is reaching the desired audience and to find out if web pages appear successfully on other browsers. It is especially convenient if the e-mail address is a "mailto:" link.
3.2. Prohibited
  • Copyrighted materials. No one should place any materials owned by others (i.e., copyrighted works, trademarks or protected material) on a web page without the expressed permission of the owner. Examples are: cartoons, articles, photographs, songs, software, graphics scanned in from published works or other web pages. It is suggested to link to and give credit to a relevant web page rather than copy material from it.
Assume materials found on the World Wide Web are copyrighted unless a disclaimer or waiver is expressly stated. Questions regarding copyright and fair use should be directed to the Daniel Library. The Daniel Library web site has a copyright information page (on the web at http://www.citadel.edu/library/copyright.htm). Contact Library Information for further assistance.
  • Threats and illegal activities. Threatening another person is prohibited by The Citadel's policy. This policy applies to electronic communications including web pages. Also web pages may not be used to commit fraudulent behavior, misappropriate someone else's identity or incite others to commit illegal acts. All policies for students documented in the Student Handbook apply to electronic communications including web pages. For students, failing to follow The Citadel's policy can lead to discipline up to and including possible expulsion from the college.
  • Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. As an Internet provider, it is The Citadel's policy to terminate the accounts of repeat infringers as defined by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998.
Adopted by Senate: November 4, 1998
Administration proposed amendments: January 25, 2000
Amendments adopted by Senate: January 26, 2000
Approved by President: February 17, 2000
3.3. Allowed
  • Anything that is not specifically prohibited is allowed.
  • More to come in the future.
