Having problems accessing WebCT?
For students encountering difficulties logging onto The Citadel's WebCT site:

Problem: Cannot log in to WebCT
Solution: Refresh the page. Also, remember that the UserID is your six-digit CIT number without "CIT" (e.g. "123456") and the password is the last four (4) digits of your social security number. Upon initial login, you will be asked to change your password (of at least four characters).

Problem: After login to WebCT, cannot access quizzes or exams
Solution: Disable all internet security devices on your computer for the specific URL http://webct.citadel.edu/. Pop-up blockers are known to interfere with access to some WebCT pages.

If problems persist:

  • contact WebCT support at (843) 953-2134.

What is WebCT?
WebCT is a Course Management System that is accessed over the Internet. At The Citadel, WebCT is located on a server in Bond Hall. Courses are password protected and only the students or guests that a faculty member allows can view the course materials. A WebCT course can be accessed by the Internet from anywhere in the world. This is what makes WebCT so attractive for creating learning communities.

WebCT is an acronym for Web Course Tools. It is a collection of educational tools that allows an instructor to create a virtual classroom. Most faculty at The Citadel use WebCT to enhance classroom instruction.

WebCT provides the following:

  • an interface allowing the design of the presentation of the course (color schemes, page layout, etc).
  • a set of educational tools to facilitate learning, communication and collaboration.
  • a set of administrative tools to assist the instructor in the process of management and continuous improvement of the course.
WebCT Advantages
WebCT can be used to create entire on-line courses, or to simply publish materials that supplement existing courses. It also requires minimal technical expertise on the part of the developer of the course, and on the part of the student. There is no software to install (other than a web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer) on the computers used by the students or instructors.

Course Publishers
WebCT has been chosen by many of the largest higher education publishers as their tool to build web-based courses to complement their course textbooks. These publisher produced courses are called e-packs and can be modified as desired by the instructor. E-packs usually contain study guides, quizzes, and other textbook content. They are generally free to instructors; however, sometimes students must purchase an access code for $10 to $30 from the publisher. Textbook representatives can answer your questions about what e-packs are offered and the cost of any access codes. For information on publishers that are using WebCT and their WebCourselets, visit the WebCT Content Showcase (http://www.webct.com/content). WebCT is a tool used at The Citadel to provide web-based test preparation to students.

If you have lost your PIN and/or registration access code, or cannot access WebCT for other reasons, please contact the Help Desk at (843) 953-HELP.

WebCT is managed by The Citadel's Information Technology Services (ITS) department.
