The
Citadel was established in 1842 by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly
and was originally located on Marion Square in downtown Charleston (see Citadel
History). Today the picturesque campus, which was moved in 1922 to the bank
of the Ashley River, is home to 24 major buildings (see Virtual
Tour) and 1,900 young men and women enrolled in 19 degree programs.
The College of Graduate and Professional Studies (CGPS) offers evening and summer, coeducational undergraduate and graduate degree programs. U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked The Citadel among the best colleges in the region in their annual surveys of "America's Best Colleges."
Campus attractions include football, baseball, and basketball games, and many other athletic events; much more sports information is available at CitadelSports.com. The Citadel Museum is a permanent historical exhibit that features the military, academic, athletic, historical and social aspects of cadet life. A Citadel parade on Friday afternoon during the academic year is the best free show in Charleston. The Summerall Chapel is a shrine of religion, of patriotism and of remembrance, and is a popular site for weddings. And don't forget to visit the campus gift shop in Mark Clark Hall for all your souvenir needs.
