The Colonel Robert McCormick Beach House is open the year around for the use
of Citadel students, faculty, and staff. Located on the Isle of Palms oceanfront,
the Beach House offers ample space for dances, parties, cookouts, and games.
Although heavily damaged by Hurricane Hugo in September 1989, the Beach Club
has been rebuilt and is under full operation. In addition to the customary wood
deck that stretches its length, the beach-front structure boasts a ballroom
with a high vaulted ceiling and a large stone fireplace.
Robert R. McCormick was an executive with the Chicago Herald Tribune newspaper,
a personal friend of General Charles Summerall, and a Citadel benefactor. The
Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation provided the funds to furnish the new
beach house.
