What Have Our Recent Students Accomplished?

• Judson Todd ('00) received an Honorable Mention Award for his research entitled,"Family Unpredictability and Attachments in Relation to Social Risks," at the 1999 South Carolina Psychological Association Meeting. Noel Sawatzky ('99) also presented a paper entitled, "Concurrent Validity of the CTONI ," at this meeting.
• Brian Cowart ('00) and Trip Boland ('99) presented their research entitled, "Validity of the General Abilities Measure for Adults," at the 1999 Southeastern Psychological Association Meeting.
• The Citadel Psychology Bowl team finished 2nd in the South Carolina Psychological Association's Psychology Bowl during Academic Day October 29, 1999. Team members included Nick Agle, Trip Boland, Steve Holderness, Noel Sawatzky, Mason Stewart, Brian Cowart, Jason Galang, and Jon Kunz.
• Jon Kunz ('99) was awarded first place in the South Carolina Psychological Association's Student Paper Competition in 1998 for his paper entitled, "Attitudes, Beliefs, and Opinions of Cigarette Smokers Seeking Treatment Through a Medical Center Smoking Cessation Program."
• Noel Sawatzky ('99) was selected to participate in the Foundation for Economic Education, Inc., Spring Seminar in Economics and Liberty, in the spring of 1998.
• Gerard Gaje ('97) was selected to participate in Emory University's prestigious Student Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program. Gerard worked with faculty of Emory University's School of Medicine to examine how Dopamine 1 and Dopamine 2 antagonists block the effects of cocaine on behavior.
• Matt Watson ('97) was awarded first place in the South Carolina Psychological Association's Student Paper Competition in 1997 for his research examining how cues can impair rather than improve memory in the elderly.
• Brad Walker ('97) was selected to work in the Air Forces Behavior Science Division.
• Erik Younginer ('97) is currently enrolled in Life University Chiropractic School.
• J. Logan ('95) was previously an instructor at Trident Technical College teaching Anatomy and Physiology. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Southwestern Medical University.
• Geoffrey Penland ('93) recently graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
• From 1994-1999, our students have authored or coauthored over 25 research presentations and publications.

The Oliver D. Bowman Award

The Oliver D. Bowman Award is given annually to the outstanding senior psychology major. The award is named for Oliver D. Bowman, the founder of the psychology department at the Citadel. Dr. Bowman served two terms as department head and was instrumental in the founding of the Counseling Center at the Citadel.
