DESCRIPTION OF AGENCY:
The Dorchester Alcohol and Drug Commission provides area residents with high
quality, affordable evaluation, treatment, and prevention services for alcohol
and other drug problems, as well as other personal or family issues that require
counseling.
The DADC operates several different service
areas including the Evening Intensive Outpatient Program, The Women's Intensive
Outpatient program, Intensive Family Services, Court-Related services, and Dorchester
Counseling Services. The one internship slot available is in the Women's
Intensive Outpatient Program (WIOP) service area. WIOP is an intensive
treatment program for women with primarily substance dependence diagnoses.
In addition to the substance-use diagnoses, many of these women also meet the
criteria for another non-substance-use related psychiatric disorder, primarily
mood and anxiety disorders, DSM-IV Axis II disorders.
TRAINING STRENGTHS:

one hour per week plus processing of group with supervisor on daily basis

for WIOP treatment

DESCRIPTION OF GROUPS:
- WIOP is primarily group treatment.
The group meets Monday through Tursday from 9:00am - 1:00pm and then the continuing
care group meets Friday from 9:00 - 10:30am.

HOURS AVAILABLE:
- Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm
(students should plan to divide their hours across 3 - 4 days.)

THROUGH SUPERVISION:
- Regularly scheduled supervision that
is treated with the same respect as therapy (e.g., no calls or interruptions
except in an emergency)
- Both parties are responsible for
contributing to the supervision agenda
- Supervisor reviews and co-signs all
documentation
- Appropriate reading material provided
to augment direct experiences
- Regular discussion of conceptualization
of treatmednt and pathology of clients in the program
- Interns are encouraged to develop
own philosophy of treatment
- Regular discussion of ethical issues
- By the end of the internship students
should be able to perform many tasks independently, so across time, less and
less direction by the supervisor.
