| The Adobe Acrobat Reader is used to view PDF (Portable
Document Format) files in a web browser (e.g., Netscape). PDF is becoming
a de facto standard for viewing documents on the web. Many government agencies
use it (such as the IRS for tax forms) and many software vendors are supplying
their documentation in PDF.
Most of The Citadel lab computers are already configured to
use Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you attempt to view a PDF file
in Netscape, and a box appears that says "You have started to
download..." with several smaller boxes, one which says "Pick
App..." then your browser has not been configured, and you need
to do the following:
-
Download the Adobe Acrobat Reader software.
-
Install the Adobe Acrobat Reader software.
-
Configure Netscape to use the Adobe Acrobat Reader software.

Download Adobe Acrobat Reader
Click on icon below and follow the directions to download the software
to your computer. Follow the instructions at the Adobe site. This could
take some time.
It is recommended that you place the downloaded ar32e301.exe
in a folder called c:\temp folder, but you can put it wherever you wish--just
remember what it was called so you can find it later!
Install Adobe Acrobat Reader
-
Quit Netscape and all other applications.
-
Click on Start, then Run...
-
Browse...for ar32e301.exe, in whatever folder you downloaded it.
-
Hit enter to run the install, follow the directions on the screens. Note
where the program is being placed; it will probably go in a folder called
Acrobat3/Reader.
One Way To Configure Netscape
After you have installed the Adobe Acrobat Reader, try to open the PDF
file again in Netscape. The same box that opened up earlier with "pick
app.." will appear. This time, click on the "pick app..." button. Use the
"browse" feature to highlight the Reader program in c:\Acrobat3\Reader\AcroRd32.
This will automatically plug in this application into Netscape for future
use.
Another Way To Configure Netscape
-
In Netscape, choose Options > General Preferences.
-
In the Preferences: General dialog box, select the Helpers tab
-
Click the New button.
-
In the New Mime Type dialog box, type "application" in the Mime Type text
box, type "pdf" in the Mime Subtype text box, then click OK.
-
In the Preferences: General dialog box, click the Browse button.
-
Select the Acrobat Reader (e.g., AcroRd32.exe) application located on your
hard disk, then click Open.
-
In the Preferences: General dialog box, type "pdf" in the Extensions text
box.
-
Select PDF from the File Type pop-up menu.
-
Select the Launch Application option, then click OK to close the Preferences:
General dialog box.
If you need further assistance, call ITS at 953-HELP(4357), and tell them
that you need help downloading and configuring your browser to run Adobe
Acrobat Reader.
