New information about the 2010 Principled

Leadership Symposium coming soon!

The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics hosted its 2nd Annual Leadership Symposium March 12 & 13, 2009.  The theme for this year's event was "Principled Leadership: Foundations for Excellence."

The goal of the symposium is to explore principled leadership across a range of vocations and professional organizations.  To engage participants to examine this theme, prominent military, sports, academic, political, and corporate leaders shared their experiences in several forums.

Cadet Zach Holliday stated, "The Krause Center's Leadership Symposium is a great source of revitalization for current and upcoming leaders.  It puts into perspective and reinforces the importance of values and characteristics that are essential components of leadership that are often overlooked and taken for granted.  It delineates the principled leader of integrity and character that we should all strive to be."

Approximately 70 student delegates from the region, senior military colleges, and the federal service academies were hosted by The Citadel to participate in the symposium and immerse themselves in "The Citadel Experience" while interacting with top cadets on campus.  The chosen Citadel delegates represented the rising sophomore and junior student leaders.  Students participating in the Principled Leadership Symposium represented a broad array of institutions, including the College of Charleston, North Carolina State University Air Force ROTC Detachment 595, North Georgia College and State University, Texas A&M, The Citadel Graduate College, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, United States Air Force Academy, United States Military Academy, Virginia Tech, Virginia Military Institute, and the Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership at Mary Baldwin College.

Cadet Lauren Fleming stated, "From the moment an individual becomes a cadet, personal responsibility and leadership training begins.  This symposium was one of the best methods one could use in continuing his/her growth as a leader because it gave us the opportunity to gain different perspectives of leadership from students with different backgrounds from across the country."

This year's symposium featured four distinguished keynote speakers.  The Greater Issues speech was given by LTG Benjamin C. Freakley, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Accessions Command.  The Honorable John Kittredge, Justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina, and Mr. J. Pete Mitchell, Chief Operating Officer of Global Aeronautica, LLC, also provided keynote speeches during the event.  The 2009 Principled Leadership Symposium concluded with a banquet featuring the Honorable Lindsey Graham, U.S. Senator, South Carolina, to deliver the keynote address.

Supported by generous contributions from Gay and Bill Krause, '63 through The Krause Foundation of Los Altos Hills, and Rita and Steve McManus, '64, the Principled Leadership Symposium has become a recurring feature of the college's annual Corps Day Weekend celebration, designed to engage students in ongoing discussions of ethical development and leadership principles.
