Overview of Curriculum

The Citadel Master of Science in Project Management (MSPM) provides students with advanced instruction through a rigorous 30-hr curriculum focusing on organizational effectiveness, principled leadership, innovative analytical procedures and solutions to emerging engineering resource issues.  The program of study is tailored to equip professionals working in industry, governmental agencies, and business to achieve higher levels of effectiveness in managing and leading their organizations in project implementation and team-based, multi-disciplinary initiatives.

The program contains two core curriculum modules focusing on technical project management (4 courses) and principled leadership (2 courses), followed by a choice of emphasis tracks in the student's area of interest (4 Courses). The core curriculum modules are summarized as follows:

• Technical Project Management – This is a core component of the program comprised of a four-course series in project management, project scheduling, quality management and operations.  Upon completion students earn a Graduate Certificate in Technical Program Management, representing twelve credit hours.

• Principled Leadership – This is a core component of the program encompassing a two-course progression in project communication; and these courses emphasize leadership development and team building for principled leaders in project and program management positions.

In addition to the two core curriculum modules, students are required to select a four-course emphasis track in management leadership studies or a variety of election areas in project management; summarized as follows:

•Leadership – This emphasis track includes four courses in project management, business, and psychology; focusing on interpersonal leadership behaviors, cognitive development, communications, and applied leadership concepts.  Upon completion of these courses, along with the principled leadership core curriculum courses, students earn a Graduate Certificate in Leadership, representing fifteen (of eighteen total) credit hours.

•Engineering – This emphasis track is comprised of four courses selected from technical elective offerings in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and System Engineering Management.  Students can choose from a variety of courses to meet their educational goals.

Ideally students, best prepared to take full advantage of the program, would have at least one year of professional experience in administration, government contracts, engineering design, technology development, construction, manufacturing, or industrial operations.  Qualified non degree seeking students are encouraged to benefit from the curriculum as follows: 1) students enrolled in on-line graduate programs as a source for transfer credits; 2) practicing engineers seeking professional development: and 3) professionals interested in obtaining a certificate in technical program management.

Other students, with specific educational goals outside of the leadership and engineering areas, can coordinate with the MSPM faculty to schedule and complete optional elective courses.
