July 1999
Dear Parents,
With a favorable semester behind us and cadets off enjoying a much-deserved furlough, life at The Citadel has slowed for the summer months, giving me a moment to update you on the progress of the Corps of Cadets in their many activities. The campus calendar stayed full throughout the spring and cadets maintained a busy schedule in everything from Black History Month activities to graduation of the Class of 1999.
At
an impressive ceremony in McAlister Field House in which presidential
candidate Pat Buchanan gave the address, 386 cadets graduated,
including Nancy Mace, the first female cadet graduate. Graduates
are all moving into places where they are making a difference.
Many have been accepted to graduate programs in such institutions
as Columbia University, Georgia Tech, MIT, MUSC, Tulane, and Virginia
Tech. Thirty-six percent of those graduating were commissioned
into military service. Army ROTC commissioned 51 cadets, Air Force
ROTC commissioned 36 cadets, and Navy ROTC commissioned 50 cadets
from the Class of 1999.
In academic life
Thirty-five
civil engineering cadets traveled to Greensboro, N.C., to take
part in the 37th Annual American Society of Civil Engineering
Conference of the Carolinas, competing against big-name colleges
and universities. Cadet Frank Powers won first place in the oral
presentation. The Citadel placed first overall at the conference
and went on to compete in the national competition which was held
in Anchorage, Alaska.
Cadets
Sellors Meador and Eric Zink successfully published the third
edition of The Gold Star Journal. The issue included five papers
from members of the Corps of Cadets: Joshua Hermsen, Chris Paige,
Matthew Coggins, Brian Murphy, Rasheem Neloms, Sellors Meador,
and Gabriel Conlon. Competing for $30,000 in scholarship money,
five teams of four cadets presented entrepreneurial plans in front
of a panel of judges in April at the first Krause Business Plan
Competition. Winning the first place scholarship award of $20,000
was the POOLPRO team, composed of Cadets Peter Murray, William
Stephenson, Bradley Hunnicutt, and Michael Pelland. The second
place scholarship award of $10,000 was awarded to the GoSystem(Gosis)
teamCadets Patrik Smida, Patrick Mullevey, Brian Chang,
and Chris Coggins. And because the judges deemed that none of
the teams were losers in the competition, an honorable mention
scholarship award of $1000 was created and awarded to each of
the three remaining teams.
Cadet
Robert Nye presented a paper entitled The Influence of Interest
Group Activity on Supreme Court Confirmations at the Southeast
Regional Meeting of Phi Alpha Theta, the international honorary
society in history. With this paper he won The Citadels
award for best independent research project from within the departments
of history, English, and political science. A member of The Citadel
chapter of Delta Pi Alpha, the National German Honor Society,
Cadet Melanie DeSantiago made Citadel history when she became
the first cadet to be a member of two language honor societies
when she was inducted into The Citadel chapter of Sigma Delta
Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, in March.
She was elected by her peers to serve as the chapter president
for Delta Pi Alpha and the vice president for Sigma Delta Pi for
the new academic year.
Thirty-seven
new members were inducted into The Citadel chapter of Phi Kappa
Phi National Honor Society in a ceremony that celebrated the chapters
20th anniversary. Noted author and alumnus Pat Conroy, Citadel
Class of 67, spoke at the banquet. Cadet Ken Carll was awarded
the Phi Kappa Phi National Award of Excellence and received a
$1,000 scholarship. Cadet Carll also received a $200 scholarship
on behalf of the Low Country Phi Beta Kappa Association.
Cadets
were awarded more than $52,000 in scholarship money from the Star
of the West Association and the Cleveland Endowment to participate
in summer scholar programs: Cadet Matthew Belcher will be studying
art history at Yale University. Five students will study at Cambridge:
Cadet Kevin Chen will study in the International Summer School;
Cadet Kinon Lecholop will study biology; Cadet Fred Marcinak,
Sgt. Trey McBride (an active duty Marine student), and Cadet Craig
Wilson will study history. Cadet Wesley Jones will complete a
biology internship in Indonesia through the University of California.
Cadet James Leitner is currently in Germany working on an internship
in dentistry. Cadets Thomas Messervy and Shawn Tobias will complete
an internship in Australia which will allow them to examine some
of the environmental impacts of traditional mining and civil and
industrial engineering practices. Cadet Brandon Peak will study
at the London School of Economics. Cadet Kyle Rayle will study
with Citadel Professor Saul Adelman, traveling to the Dominion
Astrophysical Observatory in Canada and to the University of Washington.
And Cadet Courtney Walsh will intern with Senator Connie Mack
in Washington, D.C. and take courses at Georgetown University.
Recent graduate Arthur Baker was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to travel to the University of Melbourne in Australia where he will continue his research on the risk factors that predispose one-third of diabetic patients to have severe complications. Also studying abroad are Cadet Paul Eitel, who is studying at a theological seminary in Bangladesh; Cadet Bradford Greer, who is studying at the Estudio Internacional Sampere in Spain; and Sgt. James Bise, an active duty Marine student, who is studying at the University of Cambridge.
Faculty have been busy as well. English department professor Lt. Col. David Shields, who was recently elected president of the Society of Early Americanists (a professional organization for scholars of colonial America), spent the semester on sabbatical lecturing all over the country. Captain John Kuzenski was selected as a Vanderbilt Media Fellow. At the 1999 Vanderbilt Media Fellowship Conference in July, he will be the primary chair of a panel for mass media from across the nation on The Primaries and Election of 2000 in the South. Maj. Juan W. Bahk, who specializes in comparative poetics of the 20th century, is currently comparing the irrational nature of Far Eastern Zenist poetry with Western avant-garde poetry and has published a book in SpainSurrealismo Y Budismo Zenon his unique area of scholarship. Lt. Col. James S. Leonards collection of essays, Making Mark Twain Work in the Classroom, was published by Duke University Press. Captain Jeffrey Pilcher was awarded the prestigious Thomas F. McGann Memorial Prize by the Rocky Mountain Council on Latin American Studies in Colorado Springs for his recent book !Que vivan los tamales! Food and the Making of Mexican Identity. Colonel John W. Gordon has been awarded a contract from the University of South Carolina Press to co-author a book on South Carolina in the American Revolution.
In the spotlight

April, the college announced the highest ranking cadets for the
1999-2000 academic year. Cadet Kenny Bath was named regimental
commander; Cadet Trevis Canty was named regimental executive officer;
Cadet Joel Wells was named first battalion commander; Cadet Shawn
Tobias was named second battalion commander; Cadet Shay Lingerfelt
was named third battalion commander; and Cadet Chris Cook was
named fourth battalion commander.
In
February, a delegation of cadets traveled to Toronto to attend
the North American Model United Nations. The Citadel performed
well in two of the four committees: Cadet William Allen received
Best Delegate in the Disarmament and International Security Committee,
and Cadet John Evans received honorable mention in the Social,
Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee.
Cadet
Ben Baroody wrote a stirring editorial about the Columbine High
School massacre that was published in the Florence Morning News.
Cadet Sharon Hacker, a rising sophomore in the Honors Program,
was awarded a fully-funded grant from the Avon Products Foundation
to attend the Women as Leaders academic seminar in Washington,
D.C.
The
entire Regimental Band and the Summerall Guards traveled to Savannah
to perform in the St. Patricks Day Parade. Among the Summerall
Guards other performances were the Mardi Gras weekend celebration
in New Orleans and the Azalea Festival in Wilmington, N.C. The
Regimental Band stayed busy for the entire college year, performing
in 192 functions, both on campus and off, including the Union
Veterans Day Parade, the Charleston Holiday Parade, and
the MCI Classic in Hilton Head, S.C. The Citadel Gospel Choir
traveled to Florida for their annual spring tour where they performed
in churches and civic centers in the Orlando area. The Citadel
Color Guard and Rifle Legion traveled to Walterboro, S.C., where
they participated in the Colleton County Rice Festival Parade.
In community service
Cadets
assisted the community in a myriad of activities throughout the
semester, including the Cooper River Bridge Run, the Weed and
Seeds Adopt-a-Block Program, the Charleston County Parks
and Recreation Cajun Festival, and the Lowcountry Senior Games.
Cadets responded to the Clean City Sweep Challenge 99, giving up a Saturday morning to clean the streets of Charleston. The Corps was awarded $10,000 for their efforts by The John and Kathleen Rivers Foundation. At the end of the year, cadets collected clothes, shoes, books and other miscellany in the barracks to help The Citadel Womens Club prepare for their annual Yard Sale Extravaganza which benefits cadet scholarships.
With
the help of cadets, the Junior Leagues Whale of a Sale grossed
more than $86,000money which will be channeled back into
the community through various charitable organizations. DeAnn
Spivey of the Junior League wrote praising cadets efforts:
I was truly touched by the commitment that Cadet Anthony
Rausa and Cadet Chris Webb and Cadet Reid Martin made towards
ensuring we had attendance by the cadets on all occasions. We
were overwhelmed with the number of cadets willing to serve and
I thank these gentlemen for motivating the other cadets to serve
and obtain the necessary approval. Cadet Shaun Laursen is to be
highly commended, for he spearheaded the cadets during the event
for four days. . . . And lastly, Cadet Will Rinkers positive
attitude was contagious among the other cadets and our members
while working the long shifts also.
On campus
South
Carolina Governor James C. Hodges honored The Citadel with a visit
in April. In addition to addressing the Corps, he visited classrooms,
participated in baseball practice, and took the review at parade.
As part of the Greater Issues Series, James Webb, former secretary
of the Navy and distinguished author, inspired the Corps with
an eloquent account of his days at the Naval Academy. Douglas
D. Osheroff, 1996 Nobel Laureate in Physics, visited the college
as part of the 1999 Distinguished Physics Lectures. He spoke on
superfluidity in He3. The Citadel observed Black History Month
during February through a milieu of exciting events, including
a reading by award winning author of Slaves in the Family, Edward
Ball.
More than 75 fifth graders launched their rockets on Summerall Field for the physics departments eighth Annual Rocket Day. Civil engineering cadets hosted a toothpick bridge competition for middle school students in which nine area schools participated. As part of The Citadel Fine Art Series, the National Players presented Cyrano in Mark Clark Hall Auditorium. In the Summerall Chapel, the United States Army Chorus performed, singing military, patriotic, folk, and classical songs.
The Citadel was chosen as the site for the S.C. Police Corps. The Police Corps pays for college tuition in exchange for four years of police service to an assigned department. The purpose of the program is to produce better-qualified officers by recruiting college students who show academic, athletic, and ethical strength.
The Citadel celebrated the 156th birthday of the Corps in March. Corps Day festivities included the Cadet Talent Show, the Corps Day Hop, a performance by the Summerall Guards and the Bond Volunteers, and a musical narration of the history of the college by the Regimental Band.

Preparing for another year
at The Citadel
As
we recount the good deeds and accomplishments of this academic
year, faculty and staff are preparing for the upcoming academic
year. Soon cadre will report to prepare to train the incoming
fourthclass, and members of the football, volleyball, and soccer
teams will report early as well to begin preseason practice.
In closing, I would like to share a particularly inspiring example of the kind of fine cadets who attend The Citadel. Cadet Shinji Kim, the fourth battalion religious office for next year, wrote in a paper he turned in for class, Captain Shuler helped me to understand how much I am trusted. As a result, I am greatly struggling to produce the best paper possible. I think this is something I will never be able to learn anywhere else but The Citadel, the active laboratory of honor. I am grateful to God that He guided me to this institution where I can practice to become more Christ-like. The true meaning of honor and its application are the greatest lessons I have learned at The Citadel.
I am pleased, as I am sure you as parents are, with the initiative and accomplishment of the Corps in all facets of cadet life. Please accept Norwoods and my wishes for a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
John
