Cadets lower the flag on Summerall Field.
A photographer catches cadets saluting the descending flag.
With practiced movements the cadets carefully fold the flag, taking care that it never touches the ground.
Explaining the symbolism of the flag, George Washington is said to have remarked, "We take the stars from heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing liberty."
From the archives: when a sudden gust of wind destroyed their composure, cadets in 1962 struggle for a moment to regain control of the 20- by 38-foot garrison flag.
