Groundbreaking Friday
Friday, April 26, 2002, was a momentous Friday on campus. U.S. Senators Fritz Hollings ('42) of South Carolina and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii were honored guests at the 2 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony for the building of the new Padgett-Thomas Barracks.

Hollings, who has become known around The Citadel as "St. Fritz,"speaks
of
Sen. Inouye's courage and heroism as he helped with the wounded after the attack
on Pearl Harbor and later in World War II as a volunteer in the Fifth Army.

Inouye, who served under Mark Clark in World War II, lays a wreath at

Gen.
Mark W. Clark was president of the college from 1954-65. A 1917 graduate
of
West Point, he was commanding general of the Fifth Army in World War II.

parade Col. Fulghum presents Sen. Inouye with an honorary Doctorate
of
Public Administration for his public service, leadership, and heroism.
After
Sen. Inouye spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, Fulghum said, "Before
just a few
seconds ago, I thought Santa Claus lived in the North Pole. But I was
wrong--it's Hawaii."
