Brigadier Foundation Ask Les!
Q: Why is The Citadel planning to tear down the west side of Johnson Hagood Stadium before we have all of the money? A: In recent years, The Citadel has spent well over $1 million on capital repairs and thousands of dollars on minor maintenance deficiencies just to keep the structure safe, the bathrooms functioning, and the electrical and water systems serviceable. As anyone can see, that substantial sum has done nothing to improve the looks, comfort or functionality of the stadium. We have known for a long time that Johnson Hagood Stadium is past its prime and cannot last forever. In fact, if we were to use the stadium just one more year, the college would be forced to spend a substantial amount of money for repairs necessary to make the stadium safe. Currently, costs just to maintain an unacceptable status quo for Johnson Hagood Stadium would run well into the millions in the years to come. The Board of Visitors decided enough is enough. The Citadel should not be investing limited resources in a failing structure that does not meet the standards Citadel alumni and friends expect. It is time to stop being embarrassed by our shabby side porch and invest in something that will make us proud, serve our athletic program well and be a contributing asset to the college. Q: When can we expect the west stands to come down? A: As a state entity, The Citadel has to have quite a few approvals before progressing with the demolition, and Col. Don Tomasik (vice president for facilities and engineering) is working diligently on them. Our best estimation is that the razing of the west side will begin in the spring, probably March. I have been told that the completion of the demolition could be as early as next summer, assuming we obtain all of the approvals in a timely manner. Q: What is the target date for completion of the west grandstands? A: The projection for the completion of the west grandstands is the summer of 2005, providing we obtain the necessary funding and approvals. We have approximately $3 million and need at least another $3 million before we can begin construction. Over the next three to four months, we will be deeply involved in raising the remaining balance, and once that happens, we can move forward with construction. Under the current circumstances, all funds to construct the stadium will come from private sources as no state or local funding is anticipated. Q: What are the plans for using the stadium for the 2004 season? A: Our plans are to play the 2004 season with only the east side of Johnson Hagood Stadium. To accommodate our fans, we will use some temporary seating on the west side. Q: How can people help with the project? A: The stadium
project is a high priority for the Department of Athletics and the institution.
