Steven succeeds Brig. Gen. Harry S. Carter joined The Citadel School of Business Administration faculty. In his former position as executive vice-provost for academic affairs, Steven was responsible for the planning, development and evaluation of academic activities across the 64-campus SUNY system. He worked to improve communications, maintain academic standards and improve opportunities for economically and educationally disadvantaged students. Steven's 30-year career in higher education includes significant achievements in scholarship, planning, admissions and fund-raising. An award-winning composer whose works have been performed on four continents, Steven earned his Ph.D. and M.F.A. in composition from Princeton University. He also holds an undergraduate degree from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Steven said The Citadel's traditions and commitment to high academic standards and character development attracted him to the college. "As a nation we are so much stronger when our leaders have the intellect, integrity, resilience and determination to lead by example," he said. Life at a military college suits him well, Steven said. "As the father of a soldier, I am particularly aware that our armed forces deserve not only our support, they deserve our unqualified admiration," he said. "Our men and women in uniform represent the finest ideals of professionalism, dedication and sacrifice. And I think we salute their service by leading honorable lives, by exhibiting a generous spirit and by striving to excel."
