Major Day honors stalwart friend with march

Band director and composer Major Herb Day
with Tom Culler, Class of 1950, the
inspiration behind Stalwart Friend.

Major Herb Day, director of The Citadel's regimental band, has written several marches during his career. His most recent composition made its debut on Parents' Weekend last October. The rousing tune, called Stalwart Friend, was written in honor of Thomas R. Culler, Class of 1950, who has established the Thomas R. Culler Band Scholarship.

Culler is an energetic Bulldog fan who can be easily spotted by his trademark black hat and enthusiastic cheers at football games. He does not play a musical instrument and was never in Band Company. After he graduated, however, he realized how much the band contributes to the rhythm of life at The Citadel. He decided to express his appreciation by making it possible for musically-inclined students to have the benefit of a Citadel education.
