Cadet at the Arsenal Academy describes 4th of July celebration, victory at Richmond and evacuation of James Island. Personal matters such as clothing, vacation and family are mentioned.

Confederate Army officer. Johnson was a 2nd lieutenant, Company D, 2nd Regiment S.C. Volunteers (Old Secession Guards). He served in Kershaw's Brigade, Connor's Brigade and Kennedy's Brigade.
Camped on The Citadel Green, Johnson described shelling of Charleston Feb. 14-18, panic and riots due to rations and evacuation. He was the last of troops to leave Charleston.
His wife and relatives in Columbia, S.C. were worried about Sherman's approach.
Mentioned seeing Gen. Joseph Eggleston Johnston in March 20th entry and in April 18-30 entries relating to the surrender.

Laycock was assistant treasurer of three Episcopal dioceses in Shanghai, Anking and Hankow, China in the summer of 1940. From 1942-1945 he was imprisoned by the Japanese in a concentration camp.
In his memoirs "A Prisoner in Cathay" Laycock describes his life in China and includes letters written to friends before imprisonment. Scrapbook contains camp newsletters March 26, 1944 - August 11, 1945 and concentration camp literature. Laycock was editor in chief of the newsletter.
