Bienvenue!
Welcome to The Citadel Summer Program in France.
Our Study Abroad program in France will be directed by Dr. Jellenik in
conjunction with professors from the Institut de Touraine in Tours, a medium sized city in the Loire
Valley of France. Tours
is the préfecture (capital city) of the Indre-et-Loire
département on the lower reaches of the Loire
river, between Orléans and the Atlantic
coast. Touraine,
the region around Tours,
is known for its wines,
the alleged perfection (as perceived by some speakers) of its local spoken French,
and for the famous Battle of Tours
in 732. It is also the site of the cycling
race Paris-Tours.
Tours is the largest city in the Centre
region of France.
In 2006, the city itself had 142,000 inhabitants and the metropolitan area
had 297,631.

L’Institut de Touraine attracts students from all over
the world to its summer study/immersion programs. The Institute, a
multinational and multicultural establishment open all year round, has the
good fortune to be able to welcome students from over 80 countries every
year. This unique environment lets everyone interact and discover a shared
language: French. The inhabitants of Tours
(Tourangeau) are renowned for speaking the "purest" form of
French in the entire country. The pronunciation of Touraine
is widely regarded as the most standard pronunciation of the French language,
devoid of any perceived accent (unlike that of most other
regions of France,
including Paris).
Known as “garden
of France,” Tours
is located only 60 minutes from Paris
and is a thriving and bustling city full of animation and vitality with many
year-round social and cultural activities.
As part of their study/immersion program in
Tours, students will take excursions to other famous and interesting cities
and monuments across southern France, e.g., Paris (where we will visit the famous
Louvre museum and view the Mona Lisa as well as the Vénus de Milo), the
Norman landing beaches of World War II, a day of the famous Tour de France
where American Lance Armstrong will compete for his 8th win, and
much much more.
