CONSIDERATIONS FOR ACQUISITION OF NEW SERIALS

  • Justification. Each request for a new subscription must be accompanied by a written statement justifying the need for the journal. We especially will be looking for indications that a requested journal will support teaching, but other considerations might include the number of faculty interested in its purchase, its usefulness to more than one department, whether it is necessary for accreditation, etc.
  • Price. Journals costing more than the current average price of a department's subscriptions will be less likely to be considered. We may investigate alternative means of access for especially costly journals.
  • Availability at Local Libraries. If a requested journal is already held at the College of Charleston, MUSC, or another nearby institution, we may not need it at the Daniel Library. A courier service already in place allows for prompt delivery among area libraries.
  • Online Availability. If the Daniel Library currently has access to a requested title through an electronic database, we are less likely to consider purchase of a paper copy.
  • Indexing. Only journals for which indexing is readily available will be considered.
  • Format. Willingness to accept formats other than paper will be considered.
COMMENTS
Subscriptions will generally be added once per year. All requests must be submitted on the New Journal Subscription Request Form by April 30 for the following calendar year. The library will also add journals when interlibrary loan requests indicate a need for specific titles. Subscriptions may also be added, on occasion, at the request of students or library staff.
