O
O. PERRY EARLE TENNIS CENTER
Named for O. Perry Earle, class of 1936. This is the center for the
Citadel tennis program. Completed in the spring of 1990, it includes a
pair of locker rooms, a coach's office, an equipment room and a meeting
room. It is adjacent to the Don C. Bunch Courts, named for Donald Bunch,
a Citadel Business professor and tennis coach for over 30 years. (Source:

OATH
Fourth Class Oath: RC: "All Members of the Class of 19-- raise your
right hand and repeat after me: I, your name, hereby engage to
serve as a cadet in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, The Military College
of South Carolina until graduation, or until I shall be discharged by
proper authority. I do further solemnly affirm that I will support and
comply with the regulations of the college and the South Carolina Corps
of Cadets, and to support loyally the constituted authorities of the college.
I take this obligation both to myself and The Citadel without any mental

OBSTACLE COURSE
An obstacle course was located on Indian Hill before the new mess
hall was built. It was named in honor of Charles Schnorf, class of 1981.
He was killed in the terrorist bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut,

A new obstacle course was created in the 1990's. It is located next to
the boat docks on what was formerly the old railroad tracks. It is also
named for 1st Lt. Schnorf. The current record for the obstacle course
is 52 seconds, held by Cadet Adam Burch, Class of 2003. (Source: Jeff

OHLANDT, FREDERICK WILLIAM, JR. ("GUNNER")
1928-1997. Class of 1951. Citadel star athlete and Charleston businessman. Played offense and defense on the footbll team, 1947-50. Won four Southern Conference boxing titles and won 111 of his 114 fights while a cadet. Later became one of Charleston's bet handball players. He sserved in the U.S. Army with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Headed the firm of D. W. Ohlandt & Sons. Elected to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fme in 1990. Member of the South Carolina Boxing Commission and the Board of Directors of Southeastern Wildlife Management. OPERATION CITADEL
Operation Citadel (original German Fall Zitadelle) was the German attack
against the Kursk Salient in Southern Russia. It began 5 July 1943. It was
the largest tank battle in history. (HN)
ORPHANS
The Citadel chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, the national service fraternity,
takes about twenty orphans on a boat trip each year. At Christmas time,
the cadets take up a collection for the orphans in Charleston. "I" company
handles it, and the company that gives the most gets a trophy. It is controlled

O'TOOLE, JOHN L.
The plaque on library patio wall commemorates John L. O'Toole. It
reads:
In memory of
Cadet John Lawrence O'Toole '78.
"The Admiral"
L Company.
Died July 1, 1977.
Gift of his classmates.
O'TOOLE'S WAY
The path between the Law and Padgett-Thomas barracks is named after
John L. O'Toole, class of 1978, who drowned in the summer of 1977. (HN)
