March 29, 1891-1969. Born in Charleston, S.C. Class of 1911. Served in Hawaii, Japan and the Panama Canal Zone. Major General U.S.A. Was nominated by President Truman to serve as Adjutant General upon the retirement of General J. A. Ulio, effective February 1, 1946. In 1951, Maj. Gen. Witsell retired with a physical disability and was replaced as Adjutant General by Maj. Gen. William E. Bergin. (Sources: "Post For Gen.
