1914-2005. General, U.S.A. Born in Spartanburg County, S.C. Attended The Citadel for one year, 1932-1933. Graduated from the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, 1936. Served in World War II, Korea and the Cold War. President Eisenhower appointed him Superintendent of West Point, 1960. In 1964 he was appointed deputy commander, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam; six months later, he was promoted to general and placed in command in Vietnam (1964-1968). He then served as Chief of Staff, U.S. Army (CSA), then retired from the Army, 1972. In retirement he resided in Charleston. During the 1990s he headed the City's efforts to erect a statue of General George Washington in Washington Park, behind City Hall. (Sources: William C. Westmoreland, A Soldier Reports.
