1922-2004. Citadel Class of 1942. Born in Camden, S. C. Governor of South Carolina, 1971-1975. During World War II he served in U. S. Army Intelligence, attaining the rank of Major. Graduated from University of South Carolina Law School, 1948. Served in S. C. Senate, 1955-1966; Lieutenant Governor, 1967-1971; U. S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, 1977-1981. His gubernatorial term was marked by efforts to improve race relations in the state and leadership in the drive to establish a second medical university in Columbia. His portrait hangs in the Daniel Library.
