August 12, 1912-November 29, 1994. Born in Columbia, S.C. Citadel Class of 1934. Received an LLD degree from The Citadel in 1950, LLB degree from the University of South Carolina in 1937, and a JD degree from the University of South Carolina in 1970. Admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1937. Served in the United State Navy Reserves from 1942 to 1946. Commanded a rocket launcher ship in the Pacific in the Okinawa Operation. Served as lieutenant governor of South Carolina (under governors Thurmond and Byrnes) from 1947 to 1955, and as governor from 1955 to 1959. (Source: Marquis Who's Who, 2006) (EC)
