Born in 1915 in Aiken, S.C. Citadel Class of 1936. Received an M.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1937 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1941. Served in the U. S. Army Air Forces from 1941 to 1946, rising to the rank of Colonel. Received the Bronze Star. Served as the Director of the Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, C.A. from 1966 to 1983. Author of Henry Edwards Huntington: A Biography, John Milton: The Inner Life and many works of literary criticism.
