Born in 1936 in Raleigh, N.C. Citadel Class of 1959. Earned an M.S. degree in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1967. Completed Squadron Office School in 1964. Took Command and Staff Courses at the Naval War College in 1972 and the National War College in 1976. Commissioned in the Air Force, he was trained as a B-52 pilot. Served in Vietnam as a fighter pilot and was an F-4C aircraft commander. As an assistant flight commander, he flew 107 combat missions over North Vietnam, the Republic of Vietnam and Laos. Participated in the 568th Tactical Fighter Squadron's operational deployment to South Korea following the USS Pueblo crisis, flying 15 combat missions along the Korean demilitarized zone. He later held several commands in the U. S. and in 1988 was commander of Strategic Air Command's 8th Air Force. Retired in 1991. (Source: "Biography, U. S. Air Force. Lieutenant General E. G.
