1801-1869. Governor of South Carolina, 1840-1842. Was governor when The Citadel was founded. A Unionist, he had been chosen as governor because he was acceptable to pro- and anti-Union groups in the state. Cathcart, Citadel Class of 1983. (Sources: John Peyre Thomas, The History of the South Carolina Military Academy, pp. 25-31, 151-158.
