PORT, CHAL
From Knob Knowledge
Legendary Citadel baseball coach from 1964-1992. He consistently had championship baseball teams. In 1990, Sporting News gave him the National Coach of the Year Award for baseball. While a college student at N.C. State, he made records in football rather than baseball. He averaged 5.6 yards a carry. He held the Southern Conference and ACC football record in 1952 for rushing. He was also inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
According to a 1990 New York Times article, Coach Port was quoted as saying, "Baseball has never been big at The Citadel...It's a military school, football is the god, and then basketball...Most excellent baseball players are not interested in marching and wearing uniforms."
