Knob Knowledge, also known as Fourth Class Knowledge, is a collection of Citadel lore and trivia gathered by Citadel librarians over the years. It grew out of the tradition of upper classmen asking knobs (freshmen or fourth classmen) questions to enhance their knowledge of The Citadel and its history, and to build esprit de corps. Although this collection has been called Knob Knowledge for more than 30 years, it has evolved into a veritable encyclopedia of The Citadel. Today, Knobs are only required to know what is specifically stated under "Fourth Class Knowledge" in The Fourth Class System Manual, also known as the Red Book. Note: Many entries in Knob Knowledge are followed by the initials of the librarians who have written them. HN = LTC Herbert T. Nath; DH = MAJ David Heisser; EC = MAJ Elizabeth Connor.

Knob Knowledge acknowledges the Citadel History site developed by The Citadel Alumni Association History Committee. Their fine work complements the information available here. Others who have contributed considerable expertise include Jane Yates, MAJ Steven Smith, CPT Dana M. DeFebbo, CPT Elise D. Wallace, CPT Elaine M. Robbins, and LTC Elizabeth Wall Carter.

Send comments, suggestions, or additional information to MAJ Elizabeth Connor.

On a regular basis, Daniel Library faculty review Knob Knowledge entries for accuracy and complete source citations, and consider suggestions and comments.
