LEE, ROBERT E.
From Knob Knowledge
"Duty then is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less."
This quotation is found on a plaque hanging in the east sally port in #2 Barracks. It is in #3 Barracks as well. It is also inscribed beneath Robert E. Lee's bust in the Hall of Fame on the former New York University campus, New York City. Some have questioned the attribution of this quote to Lee, suggesting that Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) made a similar statement. For more information about the attribution see: Suzy Platt, ed., Respectfully Quoted, p. 93, REF PN6081.R435 1989. (HN & DH)
