JONES, JAMES

1805-October 20, 1865. General, C.S.A. Chairman of the Board of Visitors, 1842-1865. Graduate of the University of South Carolina, then called South Carolina College. He was an attorney. In 1836, he fought in the Seminole War. He was Adjutant General of South Carolina for several years. He then became the manager of the first textile factory in South Carolina, the cotton mill at Vaucluse. During the Civil War he first served as a colonel of the 14th South Carolina Volunteers. He later became Quartermaster General for the State. He was considered an authority on militia law. His portrait hangs in the Daniel Library. (Sources: Oliver J.
