GRIBBIN, ROBERT E.

1887-1976. Citadel Class of 1906. He earned an A.B. degree from the College of Charleston and received a doctorate in sacred theology from the General Theological Seminary in New York City and a doctor of divinity degree from the University of the South. Served as an Episcopal priest at congregations in Charleston, Atlanta, Wilmington and Winston-Salem, N.C. Was consecrated Bishop of Western North Carolina in 1934. He served as chaplain of the 105th Medical Regiment, U.S. Army 30th Division. After World War II, he was discharged as a lieutenant general. After his retirement in 1947, Bishop Gribbin returned to Charleston. His portrait hangs in the Daniel Library. (Source: Louise Jones, South Carolina Lives, p. 233. REF.
