November 26, 1948-March 29, 1986. Citadel Class of 1970. Charles DeLesline Foster was the first black cadet to graduate from The Citadel. After graduation he served as an officer in the U. S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain. After leaving the Army he worked in the private sector. He perished in a house fire in 1986. In 2000, The Citadel African American Alumni Association honored Foster's memory by establishing a scholarship fund in his name.
