What club sports are offered by the Citadel?

Since graduation in the spring, the Citadel has had no club sports! That's because club sports are student organizations that are cadet-initiated, and cadet-led. Until cadets return in August, we won't know exactly which clubs will form or re-organize.

Traditionally, cadets organize boxing, sailing, rugby, paintball, lacrosse, running, cycling and triathlon, kendo, ice hockey, taekwon do, and pistol teams. Recently, racquetball, soccer, and surfing teams have also been created.

How will I find out about 2007-2008 club sports?

In the fall, check this website often. Club sport officers are encouraged to post information as they organize their teams. You will also see e-mails, flyers on campus, and hear announcements in the mess hall about clubs that are forming.

The Citadel supports club sports via a Director of Club Sports, Mrs. Mary Ellen Huddleston, who can be found in Deas Hall, room 202. Her number is 843-953-7955, and her e-mail is Mary.Huddleston@citadel.edu. Contact her if you have questions that aren't answered here.

Mrs. Huddleston meets with incoming freshmen during the basic military training period. She will speak with 4th-classmen about Citadel intramurals, campus recreation and club sports.

Lastly, The Citadel has a "Club Sport Night" during the week before Parents' Weekend. By October, all club sports have organized, elected officers, established team rules, and set their schedules. Club Sport Night is a great opportunity to speak with club officers and coaches.

I'm not a cadet; can I join a club sport?

You must have an affiliation with the Citadel (student, faculty or staff) to join a club sport.

Membership requirements are specified in each club's bylaws. Many club sports are open to members of the Citadel faculty, staff and College of Graduate and Professional Studies, and active duty military who are also full-time students.

Will I be able to get a scholarship?

Club sports are not NCAA athletic teams, and unlike many college-sponsored NCAA teams, club sports do not provide scholarships or grants-in-aid.

How much does it cost?

Most club sport budgets are limited, and therefore, teams are required to collect dues, and are encouraged to plan fundraising activities. How teams fund activities is dependent upon their goals for the year. In 2006 - 2007, club sport dues ranged from $50 to $500.

Will I get to travel?

Many club sports do compete against other college teams. How much each team travels depends upon its level of competitiveness, conference affiliation, interest and budget.

At The Citadel, cadet travel is also limited because of obligations to the Corps of Cadets. Academic success takes precedence over all extracurricular activities, and cadets often have other commitments to the corps. Requests for travel are submitted to The Commandant through the Director of Club Sports.

Will I have a coach?

Every team has experienced players who are eager to teach younger members the skills and rules of a sport. Most teams also have a volunteer, non-student coach. Coaches are affiliated with the Citadel, e.g., faculty or staff member, or live in the Charleston area. All coaches have playing and/or coaching experience in their sport.

What if I've never played before?

It's OK; most clubs don't require that you have experience to join. Teams that are recreational or instructional in nature encourage novices to join. Competitive teams may have a system to select travel squads, but these clubs still encourage beginners to practice and get better.

I found a club sport that interests me; how do I join?

Contact the team's captain or coach (see team website for phone numbers and e-mails). Contact Mrs. Huddleston if you have trouble getting in touch with a team representative.

Pay club dues, if required. You can pay dues in the Club Sport Office, Deas Hall 202.

Lastly, you must complete a personal data sheet and liability waiver, and show proof of medical insurance. This paperwork, too, should be turned-in to the Club Sport Office.
