TO: The Corps of Cadets, The Citadel
The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, has long stood as a bastion of honor, integrity, and ethical virtues. The Long Gray Line looks to you to preserve this institution's rigid military discipline, high academic standards, and most importantly, its uncompromising commitment to the Cadet Honor Code. The Citadel's dauntless reputation rests upon these ideals, and it is each cadet's duty to uphold these high principles of distinction.
The Cadet Honor Code belongs to the Corps of Cadets and is administered by cadets. Therefore, it is each cadet's duty upon enrollment to be familiar with the honor system as set forth in this Honor Manual and to thereafter abide by the Honor Code. Simply stated, the Code demands that a cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do. Particulars of the honor system are to be learned from this manual. Further explanation can be determined from your Company Honor Representative, who is also the person to whom a suspected honor violation must be reported.
Honor may be defined as an understanding of ethical conduct and choosing the moral right regardless of the circumstances. As members of the Honor Committee, we support the honor system and expect your support as well. Those who have gone before us expect and demand nothing less than your most sincere dedication to this code. If you do, yours is the reward. The benefits of honor and integrity will follow you for the rest of your life.
