Dr. Speelman's c.v.

 

Jennifer L. Speelman specializes in U.S. military and maritime history. She earned a B.A. in English and a B.S. in Education from the Penn State University and a M.A. and Ph.D. in History from Temple University. Her research examines the establishment of state maritime academies and their role in training 20th century merchant mariners. She is currently preparing her first manuscript, "When the Sea was a Hard School: A History of U.S. Maritime Education" for publication. Dr. Speelman was the 2001-2002 Robert G. Stone Fellow in Maritime History with the Maritime Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport. While at Williams-Mystic, she taught an undergraduate course focusing on America's historical relationship with the sea supplementing classroom lectures with trips to the Pacific Coast, Cape Cod, Cuba, and Nantucket.

At the Citadel, Dr. Speelman teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in world civilization, modern warfare, and naval and maritime history. She has lectured at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, SUNY Maritime Academy, and the Mystic Seaport. She is a faculty advisor to the Citadel History Club and has organized field seminars to Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum, Fort Moultrie, Fort Sumter, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. She is an active member of the Society for Military History (www.smh-hq.org) and coordinator of the 2005 Annual Meeting to be held in Charleston.
