"WE THE PEOPLE"--these words embody the ethos of what it means to be an American. In her newest book, celebrated Lowcountry artist Mary Whyte captures images of veterans from each of the fifty states in a uniquely beautiful and touching portrait of America.

The watercolor portraits include veterans from many walks of life, from every branch, women and amen, old and young, and of many ethnicities as befitting our glorious melting pot. From a mayor to an astronaut, from a teacher to a garbage collector, from a business entrepreneur to someone who is homeless, Whyte renders their exceptional lives of service with great care.

Mary Whyte is an artist and author whose work has earned international recognition. She is the recipient of the Portrait Society of America's Gold Medal and the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award, South Carolina's highest honor in the arts. Her works are in the collection of the Gibbes Museum of Art and have been exhibited widely both in the United States and throughout Europe and Asia. She is the author of six books including Working South and Down Bohicket Road.

The Citadel is honored to serve as the sponsor of the book launch and the educational partner of the Patriot Art Foundation, a nonprofit started by Mary Whyte to celebrate veterans and inspire others to service. All royalties from the sales of Whyte's WE THE PEOPLE book will benefit the Patriot Art Foundation.
