Cadet Sloan Lindsay

December 2013

My name is Sloan Addison Lindsey and I am a senior cadet officer in India Company at The Citadel. I am from Easley, South Carolina in the upstate and am majoring in education with a minor in Fine Arts to pursue a career in education administration. Having taken courses in art, music, film, and photography, I served last semester as the communications intern for the Fine Arts program to help raise awareness among my peers about what is happening on campus in the arts.

I believe that being a well-rounded individual is an essential component of developing the complete Citadel man I hope to become, combining the strict military and physical discipline with a creative perspective and cultural awareness of the world beyond the gate.  Obtaining knowledge in the arts is also helpful in building connections, both among disciplines and with individuals, as well as just to enjoy something beautiful.

As the first president of the Fine Arts Club, I was very pleased to participate in our first meeting with guest speaker Mr. Nathan Durfee, a highly-regarded artist who shows at the Robert Lange Studios in downtown Charleston.  Mr. Durfee, a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate, shared his insights about the struggles and triumphs of a professional artist.  His work is well known to many cadets who enjoy the monthly art walks at Robert Lange Studios, which kindly opened up to our group after hours so we might hear Mr. Durfee talk about his artwork on view in the gallery.  Thanks to Mr. Lange for taking this panorama photo (that's me on the left with the crutches.)  There were lots of questions from the cadets, and the evening was a successful launch to many more club events in the future.
